My Top 40 at 40: Making the First Half Count

A few years ago when I was still a “newbie” writer I remember doing some “suggested” reading so that I would have a better understanding of  the “Industry.” My first mistake was listening to this person’s “helpful” advice; my second was actually following through with it. When you’re just starting out as a writer; working on getting your books out and published the last thing you really want or need to hear is all the over-the-top and dramatically negative comments about how difficult this industry is. I mean really…don’t we already know that? If it were easy, I daresay there would be a lot more books lining library shelves.

Anyway, I remember coming upon this three or four page rant written by a woman with a very high opinion of herself; a self-decided expert in the “Industry” who was providing tips on what people should and shouldn’t write. One of her suggestions was: “Don’t write your own biography; everyone does it and unless you’re someone interesting like Mick Jagger no one really cares.” I wasn’t writing a biography but I did file those words away for future reference because…I guess I could see her point.

However, after reading “My Top 40 at 40” I will most definitely need to forget this woman’s haughty suggestion because “My Top 40 at 40” is one of the most interesting books I’ve read so far this year. I will admit it helps that author Kari Loya has led an interesting life. Loya has been unafraid to live life to the fullest and he writes his story with just the right amount of humor and sarcasm to make the experiences he chooses to share fun to read. Finding a book that makes me smile much less laugh out loud doesn’t happen very often but when I’m lucky enough to happen across one of these rare finds I definitely keep and treasure the book.

In summary, “My Top 40 at 40” was an amazingly fun read. This memoir / biography is well-written and an easy read for all as it is a compilation of very short stories. Great as a gift, a great pick me up on a bad day, a great coffee table conversation starter or...great bathroom reading material for all your dinner party guests. Just make sure it doesn’t walk out the door with them when they say good night…

When We Get Back Up: A Generation will Change

From the Introduction of “When We Get Back Up: A Generation Will Change,” author Sandra D tells the reader, “After emerging from a period of darkness where even a dream vacation became a personal nightmare, I patiently wrote this book based on actual events.  I give personal accounts of real life experiences.  In so doing, I use my real name while changing the names of all others.  While reading, you may laugh, sigh or shake your head in disbelief as some of the challenges I faced were very unusual.  You may even nod your head in agreement, having faced similar challenges.”

Each one of the 29 Chapters in the book begins with a positive inspirational quote such as “I am grateful for the lessons I have learned within my family.” (p.80) and “I allow love to find me.” (p. 252)

Sandra D does not hold anything back when telling the story of her life.  All of the details are there and one can vividly picture the events taking place around her.  She does an incredible job of relaying her experiences to her readers.  Her hurt and pain can be felt permeating throughout the pages of the book.  However, also coming from Sandra D’s writing, is the sense of inspiration, the feeling of hope, and the promise of healing.

I commend Sandra D for telling her story and think that “When We Get Back Up-:A Generation Will Change” would be an excellent resource for those suffering, or having suffered, from abuse.  It is also an eye-opening book for those who haven’t been through such trauma, to get a glimpse inside others’ struggles and develop a sense of empathy for those scarred by situations in their past.  As Sandra D states, writing this book was therapeutic for her.  I believe that the contents within will also help many others who are, or have been, in similar situations.

The Quotable Libra

Astrology is a curious field (I cannot call it a science). It is very entertaining to read your horoscope in the morning, anticipating what is in store for the day. Even though, horoscopes are very generic and do not actually provide a window into the future, it is a lot of fun to skim through them. A positive horoscope can even raise one’s mood and make the day more enjoyable. There is more to zodiac signs, however, than just daily horoscope. There is a multitude of books written on the qualities and characteristics of zodiac signs, describing human personalities, habits, etc. There are articles about especially strong bonds between certain zodiac signs. There is love advice and much more. “Stars know and can tell everything,” according to astrologists. The only secret is to find out what exactly they are saying.

"The Quotable Libra" is unique in combining descriptions of Libra’s personalities with quotations describing these attributes shared by famous Librans themselves. For a person, who is a Libra, or closely knows one, it is very entertaining to read these quotations. The author has gone through books, articles, interviews, carefully choosing words, which can relate with certain Libran traits. For example, there are sections on peace, justice, partnership, charm, smiles and laughter, living in the moment, and idealism, all of which are talents of Librans, according to the text. Each such section starts with the descriptions of traits, then goes on with interesting quotes, and often finishes with some examples of celebrities, which fit with the topic being discussed.

This book is a perfect gift for a Libran or a spouse of one. It is definitely a fun read for those, who enjoy reading celebrity quotes. The topics are often quite general, and quotations can be used not just in relation to the zodiac sign. Overall, a fun read, whether the reader is a Libran or not. Chances are, we all know some Librans, and it is quite amusing to read about their qualities from famous people.

Free Love: True Stories of Love and Lust on the Internet

I tried Internet dating once, several years ago. I quickly discovered it wasn’t for me. I was totally honest about my profile, but the majority of the men who contacted me were not. They were incorrect about their height, athletic physiques and their employment status.  I decided this wasn’t a good avenue to find a mate. I ended up having to go the old fashioned blind date route!

I do have to admit that out of pure fascination I still find myself lurking on Internet dating sites. I have a student that belongs to just about every free and paid online dating site out there, so I get to access them through her. I am looking for a date? No. Am I looking for a casual intimate encounter? No. I just find the ads absolutely fascinating. Well, some of them are downright entertaining, but I will admit that quite a few are boring and need some work.  This is especially true in the area of photographs. People should never try to post a picture of themselves that they took on their own.

 “Free Love” covers just about every avenue that a person might be seeking to meet someone. This includes men seeking women, women seeking men, men seeking men, women seeking women, singles seeking couples, casual encounters and missed connections.  As I read each ad, and the story behind it, I was absolutely entertained and grateful that I am not single!  I personally have known people to hire marketing people to spruce up their ads, and people who have used this forum for casual encounters.  The casual encounters usually have had more success with getting replies  

Behind each online ad is always true story. I always wonder, “Does the real truth match the ad?” In “Free Love: True Stories of Love and Lust on the Internet,” I had the opportunity to go behind the scenes and find out what was really going on.  The real stories varied greatly; however, there are a lot of married people who anonymously admit that they use the online dating sites to seek sexual encounters outside of their relationships.  To me, this is the sad part.  While many of the ads openly admitted their marital statuses, I found it sad that these people are being more honest with strangers than people that they’ve committed themselves to.

Other than an entertaining read, “Free Love” also teaches some valuable lessons.  One of the biggest one is that a person who is seeking a mate on a dating site, should proceed with caution. The potential replies might be from people who are not who they represent themselves to be.  Should this be a deterrent? No, I don’t think so, because there are genuinely good people seeking real commitment. That is how the author met his wife. It is also how my sister met her wonderful fiancé.  If you are planning on trying online dating, or know someone who is, “Free Love” is a must read! For the rest of us who are happy with our lives, it is a great book to curl up with!

A Practical Guide for Raising a Self-Directed and Caring Child: An Alternative to the Tiger Mother Parenting Style

Parents nowadays are anxious to give their children a good start and this guide is a valuable handbook to direct them in developing skills to successfully raise their children.

Lichtman begins with pre and post natal care.  He examines how the change in lifestyle, financial responsibilities, health and nutrition and home environment will impact the emerging family.  He then encourages parents to provide the best start for the child by establishing safe yet stimulating surroundings in which the child can explore. He also explores arrangements for childcare.  These preparatory chapters set the positive enriching atmosphere in which to begin parenting.

Building self-esteem, setting limits and disciplining are discussed, as are role modeling and communication.  Children test limits and need to know at what point they have to face consequences. Techniques are offered for setting guidelines and maintaining consistency to help create a more confident child. Parents doing this in safe surroundings prepare the child for the “real world.”

Parenting skills are important to develop.  “Helicopter” parents, those who hover and micromanage their children’s lives are doing them a disservice by intervening.  They tend to step in to fix problems rather than teach the skills necessary for self-direction.  Many methods are suggested to cope with social problems and risky behavior, such as alcohol, drug use, and sexual promiscuity. Divorce and other alternative family configurations are also discussed.

When Your Child Is Being Bullied: Real Solutions for Parents, Educators & Other Professionals

As an adult most of us have vivid childhood memories of the class bully calling names, threatening, pushing or hitting.   We may have not been the victim but were certainly at one time or another,   bystanders watching the abuse.  Most observers are reluctant to step in for fear of repercussions. The emotional power held by the bully can diminish victimized child’s self-confidence and self-esteem.

Smart Parenting for Smart Kids: Nurturing Your Child's True Potential

In the Introduction to “Smart Parenting for Smart Kids,” Eileen Kennedy-Moore, Ph. D. and Mark S. Lowenthal, PsyD tell us that “there’s a wrong way and a right way to use this book.  The wrong way is to view it as over two hundred pages of stuff you need to ‘fix’ or ‘improve’ about your child or a long list of even more things you ought to be doing, on top of everything else you’re doing, to be a good parent.  The right way to use this book is as a resource to support your current efforts to raise a happy, healthy, productive, and kind child.”  (p. 8)

When I was reading this book I was amazed at how much I saw my older son in it.  Right away in the opening of Chapter 1, which deals with perfectionism, I saw listings of particular traits which he possesses.  From here on out I knew that this was going to be a book that was going to be applicable to my family and one that I knew I was going to learn a lot from.  My expectations were definitely met as I continued to read.

One of the recommendations in the chapter on perfectionism is to not check over your child’s homework.  I am a parent who does check over my child’s homework and when I first read this I thought that this was something that I would never be able to stop doing.  As I read more though I understood the authors’ points and see how this could actually, in some ways, harm my child.  In the fall, I am going to make an effort to let my son do more on his own and learn that mistakes here and there are not the end of the world.

I highly recommend “Smart Parenting for Smart Kids” to any parent of a “bright” child.  I think that this book will greatly help you understand your child and, as the back cover states, to “make the most of their abilities and become capable, confident, and caring people.”

Beyond Schizophrenia: Michael’s Journey

“Beyond Schizophrenia:  Michael’s Journey” is written by Michael’s mother, Susan Frances Dunham.  Dunham graduated from the Sandusky School of Practical Nursing and practiced in a variety of settings.  This practical experience gave her a little insight into the world of mental illnesses, but I don’t think anything could properly prepare her for when her own son fell victim to schizophrenia.

Michael was a normal, happy college student when things began to change.  Many of the behaviors that Michael was exhibiting led one to believe that there may have been drug use.  However, testing proved that theory to be wrong.  Michael had developed schizophrenia.

Dunham takes us on the family’s journey through their battle with this terrible illness.  As a parent myself I found her story to be heartbreaking as I read about how they struggled through all aspects of this mental disorder.  To think that in an instant, a healthy, ordinary young man was so dramatically transformed by this illness is frightening.

Before reading “Beyond Schizophrenia:  Michael’s Journey” I had a very generic vision of what schizophrenia was.  Dunham’s book really opened my eyes and provided me with a very clear picture of the disease from the symptoms all of the way to the side effects of treatment options.

I believe that “Beyond Schizophrenia:  Michael’s Journey” would be an excellent required reading choice for many health care related college classes.  I think that everyone could learn a lot from reading this book.  I commend Dunham for opening up and sharing with the world her family’s experiences.

Destined to Live, Despite Me

Yolanda Shanks is a suicide attempt survivor.  Since those days of despair when she was a teenager, she has found healing in establishing an intimate relationship with God.  She is currently a Bible study teacher.  Having been in this situation allows her to offer sound and practical advice for those who may still be struggling.

Shanks’ writes in the Introduction to the book, “…since God has healed and restructured my life, I now sit writing to you because I am convinced that all life has been ordained by the will of God, and it is His desire that we live and not die separated from Him, and live in the abundance of joy, which is only found in salvation through Jesus Christ!  I can testify that the answers to these questions are exactly what you need to build or rebuild your spiritual foundation.”  (p.10)

Shanks presents many biblical truths throughout “Destined to Live, Despite Me” in a very straight-forward and easy to understand manner.  I would say that even if you aren’t a suicide attempt survivor and if you are interested in a study on Bible basics that this would be a good book to read.  She explains many Scriptures using modern day language which makes the writings simple to comprehend.

I think that “Destined to Live, Despite Me” would be of great comfort to a suicide attempt survivor.  It should be just the book that one should turn to in an attempt to rebuild and get one’s life back in order.  The clarity of Shanks’ writing lays the framework for one to easily begin to establish a fulfilling relationship with God.  Shanks states that “I am certain that this book will assist absolutely anyone and everyone who simply needs spiritual direction for purposeful and meaningful living” (p.9) and I couldn’t agree more.

Sam Feels Better Now! An Interactive Story for Children

In the Introduction to “Sam Feels Better Now:  An Interactive Story for Children,” the author states: “This book presents stage one of trauma therapy for children (Brack 2007).  It will help those with psychological injury from abuse or other causes.  The intention is for the child to use it in conjunction with a therapist.  This can occur over a period of time, not necessarily within one session.  Further work may be needed following completion of this book.  The therapist is encouraged to follow this program while consulting with caregivers to create a safe, supportive environment for their child and family.”  (p.1)

What follows is an interactive story about a young boy named Sam who visits a therapist with his mother.  Sam has been scared by something and is having difficulty sleeping, eating, and getting along with others.  The therapist takes him through a series of activities including drawing, playing, and telling stories aimed at the goal of helping Sam to feel better.  Throughout the book there are areas where the child is invited to draw pictures to help Sam.  For instance, “Can you help Sam by drawing ways that will help him relax?” (p.27)

The author of the book, Jill Osborne holds is a Licensed Professional Counselor with a M.S. and Ed. S in professional counseling.   This book, “Sam Feels Better Now:  An Interactive Story for Children” contains elements of trauma therapy, play therapy, and expressive therapy to help children work through their situations.

I think that any therapist working with children would benefit from having this book on hand.  The text of the story is easy for a young child to understand while the interactive format of “Sam Feels Better Now:  An Interactive Story for Children” allows for a child to open up and feel comfortable in expressing themselves in a fun and non-intimidating manner.  They will be able to relate to the main character Sam and will hopefully achieve the same results that he does.

Reena’s Bollywood Dream

“Reena’s Bollywood Dream” is a book that addresses the important issue of sexual abuse.  Reena is a young 8-year-old girl who dreams of being a Bollywood star.  When her pen pal, her Uncle Jessi, emigrates from India to the U.S., he brings her a Bollywood movie.  Reena is enthralled with copying the dance moves of the Indian actress on the screen.

Her parents don’t approve of her dreams to be an actress.  They want better for her.  Her Uncle Jessi though, however, encourages her.  He even gives her a gift of a tiny little blouse and a skirt.  He has her put it on in the same room as him and urges her to dance while he video tapes her.  Uncle Jessi starts to take things a little too far but Reena gets away and goes to tell her parents.

When I first picked up the book to read, I was very curious as to how the author would approach the subject of sexual abuse in a children’s book.  I was very pleased with how the sensitive issue was handled in a way that was extremely appropriate for young children.  She definitely gets the point across in a way that is not overly graphic for a young child.

The topic of sexual abuse can be a difficult one to address with your children.   Reading “Reena’s Bollywood Dream” would be an excellent first step in this process and then you can go from there.  As one can tell from the title, the book is written from a South Asian perspective.  However, generally the concept of sexual abuse is the same in any culture.  Although one may have to explain “Bollywood” and other terms to a child who is unfamiliar with this culture, the main point of the book will still be easily understand.  There is even a glossary in the front for those, like me, who are not familiar with such terms as “nani” and “lengha.”  I believe that this book would be appropriate for anyone wanting to educate their child about the topic of sexual abuse.

The Simple Man's Burden

I’ve spent the last three days toiling…trying to figure out how to write a good review for “The Simple Man’s Burden” by author Vergil Den. Unfortunately I was stumped then and I’m still stumped now.

Where do I begin? Well, the cover was unusual. The book’s title “The Simple Man’s Burden” was underlined however when I looked closer I saw that the “underline” was actually a metal closet rod from which both a pressed man’s suit and eleven empty hangers hung. Below that were the words “Observations and Reflections from Within the Complex.” Mm hmm… Interesting… I wondered if I was going to open the book and find myself reading about some Communist compound that everyone who was unfortunate enough to be stuck inside was trying to escape. Maybe that feeling was the author’s intent; if so, then kudos to him. I flipped the book over and read the back. The author’s comment that “he is a recovering Empty Suit” threw me for a loop but at least the jacket’s artwork made perfect sense now.

In “The Simple Man’s Burden” the author wants us to follow along and experience a day in the life of a quietly desperate company man. This unhappy man, who is a management consultant, shares with us his dark and cynical thoughts about this absurd and unpredictable day. Did I mention that these thoughts are supposed to be humorous? According to the jacket they are supposed to be “bizarrely humorous” and have been compared to “Bloom County,” “Office Space,” and “Monty Python.” While I haven’t seen “Bloom County” I have watched “Monty Python” and “Office Space.” I may not have laughed at everything they contained but I did laugh at some. That’s more that I can say for this book which elicited from me a total of one half-hearted snicker during its entirety.

Sadly, I found “The Simple Man’s Burden” a burden to read. The author, Vergil Den, seems intent on writing in a very pompous and garrulous manner. He has a plethora of gratuitously polysyllabic words of which ubiquitous seems to be one of his favorites. He drones on and on about the wrongs of almost everything and it seems as if nothing is safe from his overly critical opinion and let me reiterate his opinion even though more often than not he presents it as fact. A tiny example: his bold assertion that all ESs (Empty Suits) are golfers. Has he met every single “ES” in the world? Maybe a better statement would be that he’s sure all ESs are golfers…not that they are. And honestly does it really matter if they are or aren’t? And just out of curiosity…isn’t labeling a form of discrimination?

I could continue indefinitely with my criticism but I won’t. Suffice it to say that I neither enjoyed nor agreed with the message in “The Simple Man’s Burden.” And lastly, I found the author’s voice to be exceptionally critical, disdainful, condescending, and mean-spirited toward mankind in general.

The Imprint Journey: A Path of Lasting Transformation Into Your Authentic Self

“Our subconscious imprints are the deep-seated beliefs and messages we have received and internalized.  Once an imprint is internalized, it becomes a subconscious governing force in our lives. Our imprints form our emotional map, determining our ability to relate to self and to others. Imprints form our perceptions, values, and belief systems. Imprints determine the quality of our relationships with life, God, self, and others. Our values govern our choices as well as our behaviors. They determine whether we are reactive or pro-active. “   (p. 11)

In “The Imprint Journey:  A Path of Lasting Transformation Into Your Authentic Self,” Desjardins shares with us her own imprints, stories of others’ imprints, and provides the reader the tools and information needed to successfully overcome any unwanted imprints that may exist in order to help the reader realize his/her “Authentic Self.”

The first part of the book focuses on Liliane Desjardins' life.  Reading Desjardins' personal story was deeply interesting to me.  She definitely has led an eventful life thus far and reading of all of the imprints picked up along the way was quite fascinating.  I found the sharing of her life history to be one of the most appealing parts of the book.  The inclusion of personal stories and backgrounds in “self-help” type books really add to the book for me.

The second part of Desjardins' work centers on providing the reader with the tools to recognize and assess imprints and the steps to take to transformation.  This information is presented in a manner that a layperson is able to enjoy and understand, and therefore, easily able to learn from. 

I think that Desjardins' work has merit and everything that she says makes complete sense.  “The Imprint Journey: A Path of Lasting Transformation Into Your Authentic Self” would be beneficial to anyone looking to transform their lives.  We all have imprints of some kind so I can’t think of anyone that the information in this book would not be applicable to.

The Employee Rights Handbook: Effective Legal Strategies to Protect Your Job from Interview to Pink Slip (Law As It Applies to Other Pro)

This book should be read by everyone, several times.  Not only does the author speak to everyone that is an employee but also the employers; what they can and can not do is spelled out in black and white. The text covers everything from interview questions to post employment benefits. Those just entering the workforce should be required to read this book.

I have read several employment law books in my day but none were as well written and informative as this one.  Everyone can understand it, there is no legal jargon to intimidate the reader and make them feel as though they aren’t smart enough to stand up for themselves.  Attorney Sack guides the reader through various scenarios, explaining each step as he goes.

The book is laid out in a very easy to follow format which makes it very simple to find the topic of interest and flip to the page.  There is no need to dig for information and try to decipher where the needed text may be hidden.

The author does a wonderful job of explaining the law and at the same time letting the reader know that some cases require an attorney.  In these times no one should be without this book.

Of course our knowledge of these areas is relative to our technology, case in point the town of Stanley, which sits right smack on the newly discovered seismic fault line in Idaho.

My personal view on “From Crisis to Recovery” is that it’s a fantastic “just in case” book. This is especially helpful since you know we have that whole world ending in 2012 Mayan prophecy thing hanging over our heads. However, in case of any emergency, I’d like to have an easy to understand formula to follow rather than just “winging” it. Plus, since I’m a notoriously late sleeper, a plan of action would be great. Otherwise by the time I actually awake from my beauty sleep all the grocery stores, gas stations and ATMs will be completely emptied and the town will be vacant. I can see it now. Just me and that lone tumbleweed blowing across my front yard….

On a more serious note though “From Crisis to Recovery” by George W. Doherty, MS, LPC is a fantastic book. It’s chock-full of useful information and it explains this information in an easy to follow, easy to understand language. Some of the topics discussed include understanding what a crisis is, understanding what stress is, explaining how stress affects us as individuals, coping, strategic planning and the list goes on. “From Crisis to Recovery” offers the reader an insightful way in which to understand and deal with a crisis, or an emergency, on many different levels.

“From Crisis to Recovery” is definitely a great book for health practitioners, emergency workers and the general public alike. If we, the general public, could educate ourselves to better understand how to react during a crisis, any crisis, I feel that the response and recovery processes could then run smoother. And to quote a friend of mine: “Proper planning prevents poor performance and promotes productive practices.”

In summary a five-star book and a “must read” for anyone who prefers to be ready when crises happen.

DUH !: "The good Lord set definite limits on man's wisdom, but set no limits on his stupidity and that's just not fair" Konrad Adenauer

It took a bit of time before the humor of the book took hold.  The author drags on about how he entered the Auto Dealing Industry and rambles about his qualifications to such a degree that I felt as though I was reading an excessively long resume.  At one point he actually includes the report he had written up for the small “mom and pop” dealership he was working at.  This took several pages and while informative to the issues surrounding the dealership, and to a small degree perhaps even integral to the continuation of the story, was dull and boring and felt more like page filling than actual, necessary text.

There were amusing stories and a few characters that anyone reading the story can easily identify with but this is not the book to pick up for a laugh or even for entertainment unless you work in this field.  That said, I do believe that anyone in the auto dealing business will likely find this a very enjoyable book packed full of knowledge acquired from years of working in the industry.  The anecdotes the author tells will strike a cord with those that have dealt with the absurd demands placed on the author; as well as the ridiculous expectations that cannot be met due to the general hand tying that he dealt with in his career.

The True Nature of Tarot

“The True Nature of Tarot” is a revised and expanded version of Diane Wing, M.A.’s first edition of “The Nature of Tarot” which was written in 2003.  In the introduction, she states that “…the same philosophy holds true:  tarot is not a predictive tool, but rather a gateway to open us to the potential of who we are; show us the way to apply occult philosophy to manifest our desires; and to tap into the Universal Energy.  With a strong connection to the Universal Energy, the individual is capable of creating an ideal present and future.” (p.v)

I have never had a tarot reading, but I will admit that I definitely have a curiosity about the subject.  One of my concerns about tarot was addressed immediately in the first sentence of the first chapter and that was the portrayal of tarot as being an evil practice.  Wing says that while it may be true that some tarot readers may be “practitioners of the black arts,” for the majority the opposite is true.  She says that in order to have psychic awareness you have to believe in Universal Energy (i.e. God, Spirit, etc.) and that it is nearly impossible without it.

After her general explanation of tarot, Wing goes on to explain psychic sensations and grounding techniques.  Then she explains how to read and to interpret the tarot cards.  After providing the reader with an outline of the basics, she then delves into taking a closer look at each card and their respective meanings.

As someone completely new to all of this, I found the last part with all of the card pictures and meanings to be very interesting.  Whether you are just curious (like me), get tarot readings, or are interested in becoming a tarot reader, I recommend “The True Nature of Tarot” to anyone who wants to get more insight on the subject of tarot.

Mindfulness and the Art of Choice: Transform Your Life, 2nd Edition

The 1st edition of “Mindfulness and the Art of Choice” by Karen Sherman, Ph.D. was published two years ago in 2008.  That edition won “Best Personal Growth Book” from Walsh Success Seminars and also won 2nd place from Reader’s Views in the Self-Help category.  What prompted Sherman to create a 2nd edition of this book was that as she continued in her practice she found another use for the visualizations.  When she saw how effective these tools were she knew that she had to let the reader know about them.

I have not read the 1st edition of the book so all of the information was new to me.  The book is divided up into two different parts.  The first part focuses on explaining the art of choice and how it works.  The second part focuses on different exercises.  I really enjoyed the fact that so many exercises were included in the compact 116 page book (26 to be exact).  I find that books encouraging reader participation work so much better for me that those that just require me to read them.

One of my favorite exercises in the book was right away in the beginning and it was a relaxation exercise.  She asks you to gauge your level of tenseness beforehand and I was about an 8 the first time I did it.  After doing the techniques my body was at about a 2 afterward.  It really worked well for me.

I recommend “Mindfulness and the Art of Choice- 2nd edition” to anyone looking to transform their lives by breaking free from the past and getting out of old patterns.  Sherman does a great job at providing the reader with an involving book that is easy to follow and understand.

Gentling: A Practical Guide to Treating PTSD in Abused Children

William E Krill, Jr. LPC begins "Gentling: A Practical Guide to Treating PTSD in Abused Children” with the following paragraph:  “What would the world be like without gentleness?  Gentleness is such a basic human characteristic that we often take for granted.  Gentleness appears to be so basic that even animals can be seen behaving in a gentle fashion following the birth of offspring.  Some may argue that such behavior is simply instinctive for the animal mother; a measure to ensure the growth of the baby and thus the continuation of the species.”  (p. 1) From this description comes the concept of “Gentling” which Krill describes as, “the process of delivering the balm of gentle gestures.”  (p.1)

After the introductory section describing the main concept, Krill goes on to define PTSD and specifically look at the signs and symptoms of PTSD in children.  Then he explains how to employ the Gentling techniques and approaches.

I found Krill’s presentation to be very straight-forward and to the point.  The use of the case studies throughout the book was a wonderful way to illustrate and drive home the main points of the book.  Appendix A, B, C, and D, at the end of the book provide the reader with a number of valuable tools and resources such as a “Child Stress Profile,” information about “Fostering a Sexually Abused Child,” and charts depicting “Stress Signs in Children with PTSD.”

“Gentling: A Practical Guide to Treating PTSD in Abused Children” is a very thorough and comprehensive guide.  I believe any mental health professional, physician, parent, or foster parent would benefit from reading this book and following the approach and techniques outlined within.

Law of Attraction Handbook

“Law of Attraction Handbook” is Aiman A. Al-Maimani’s second book. His first book was entitled “How to Attract Wealth, Health, Love and Luck Into your Life Immediately: A Concise Manual of Personal Success.” In his first book he covered the topic of the Law of Attraction in a more abstract way. In this current book, Al-Maimani begins by explaining what the basic concept of the Law of Attraction is. He presents the information in a very straight-forward and easy to understand manner. He tells us that the Law of Attraction is rooted in quantum physics. While this may sound intimidating, he breaks everything down into easily understood components. One of the examples that he gives of energy attracting and resonating with each other involves piano keys. “If you place two pianos in a quiet room, and on one piano you press the third key from the right, the second piano will absorb the energy on the same key on its own keyboard, and it will resonate and vibrate at the same time.” (p.2) I loved this visual example of how things are attracted to each other. After explaining the concept of the Law of Attraction, Al-Maimani moves on to talk about various techniques such as visualization, the power of feelings, affirmation, meditation, and the power of expectation. At the end of the book is a section on goal setting and then a 21 day exercise for affirming the most important of the goals. I enjoyed the interactive aspect of “Law of Attraction Handbook.” There are various exercises throughout the book for the reader to engage in as well as the 21 Day Exercise at the end of the book. I also enjoyed how there was a brief bullet-point chapter summary immediately following every chapter. I found this helpful in going back to review what I had read. I think “Law of Attraction Handbook” is a positive book and believe that following the steps in the book will help you to lead a fuller, happier life.
